Wisdom for Fathers - Virtual Class

STARTING APRIL 1st  -- Calling all husbands and Fathers!  Mike Cook and I will lead a virtual Wisdom for Fathers class for men for 10 weeks starting April 1st!  We are really looking forward to this online study of Wisdom for Fathers. We have a real passion for men's ministry and earnestly desire to get this study into the hands of men.   One of the new ideas we want to try is the online approach, making this material available by sending out daily... Ready for Real Freedom?

Happy Independence Day! As we think about freedom, I’d like to pose some questions: Deep down, do you really feel free, at least when it comes to making real progress as a husband, father, and godly man? What if you feel trapped in the same old cycle of bad habits and destructive behaviors? Let me give you an example. Let’s say you come from a long line of men who yell at their children to get them under control. Your granddad may have yelled at your dad, and your dad yelled at you. So when... Read More

Scriptural Prayers to Pray for Your Children

Most Christian dads know that they should be praying for their children, but sometimes we don’t know what to pray. I have learned that nothing is more powerful than praying God’s own words back to Him, and I wanted to share a list of scripture prayers that I’ve prayed over my own three children. I hope you find it helpful in guiding your prayers as well. 1. That they will know Christ as Savior early in life. (Psalms 63:1, II Timothy 3:15). 2. That they will have a hatred for sin. (Psalms... A Father's Vision

I have never met a father who didn’t want to be a good one. There is within us a strong desire to be the best father, and yet, we struggle with how to do it. Where do we start? What should be our goal?  As you celebrate the blessing and privilege of being a dad on this Father’s Day, I challenge you to expand your vision of what it means to be a father and the high calling you have as you guide your children. Psalm 127:3-5 says, “Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from... Read More

A Challenge: Finding Quiet Time with God when Your Home is Anything but Quiet

In my last post, I talked about meditating on God’s word so as to build “storm- and weather-resistant” lives that tap into a steady source of wisdom. There’s really only one way to start building that kind of life, though. You have to spend time alone with God. This is the most important fathering tip I can share, and there are no shortcuts on this one. I have to admit, though, that when I was a young husband and father, committing to a daily quiet time for Bible study and prayer was ... Read More

"Wise guy" or Wise Man?

If we were to stop and take an inventory of ourselves, what would it reveal? Am I making the grade as a dad? As a husband? Am I becoming wiser in the things of God, or am I just a “wise guy,” making it through life without really impacting my world for God? If you know you do want to be a godly man and make good decisions, then where are you going to get real wisdom? You can start with Psalm 1, a snapshot of a godly man. There we find what a godly man doesn’t do, what he does, and then what... Read More

EXPOLIT Spanish Conference in Miami, FL - May 4-9, 2012

My first experience at the Spanish EXPOLIT conference was a pleasant surprise! I was thrilled at the magnitude of this event and how well developed the Spanish Christian publishing/media world has become.  About a third of the exhibition booths were media oriented… mainly radio and television.  Thanks to Celia Robertson, our Madre Sabia Director, we were blessed to be interviewed by four radio and television stations.  It was great to give our testimony of how the Lord has lead us... Enlightened to Know His Power

One of my greatest struggles as a man is not so much what I should do…here in America our Christian book stores are full of biblical materials giving us instructions and even inspiration to live a godly life. But my experience shows that is not enough. It took some difficult circumstances to bring me to the “end of self” to find the resurrection power of Christ (Galatians 2:20). That started a journey of empowerment that continues to amaze me. So one of my favorite scriptural prayers for me... Read More

Reflections on Men's Prayer Gathering...

After having time to reflect on this prayer gathering, the Lord is making more clear His intentions to have us focus on equipping and praying for men to "step up" and meet the challenge to be the spiritual leaders of our homes...and interestingly enough, the ladies came away with the same revelation during their prayer weekend retreat at the same time as the mens!  For those of you that have seen the movie "Courageous", you will understand the passion I feel about seeing men involved in... Men's Advance Prayer Gathering, March 10, New Ulm, TX

A small but focused group of men met last Saturday for a day of fellowship, singing, worship, but predominantly prayer.  It was great to see men gathered from 7 different churches in the Houston area unified in Christ as we shared and prayed together.  In the morning we prayed for ourselves, our families, our churches and our nation.  We used the ACTS prayer strategy: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. It was especially meaningful to confess and cry out together for our... Read More

A peek into 2012

Since I retired last year from 40 years in Oil and Gas to devote more time to family and ministry, made an international move, decided to build a new house in a new area of Houston, and join a new church (to us), my reflection on what the Lord has done is so amazing! And as I look ahead into 2012, I see many more opportunities to serve Him which really excites me.  We have just started a 5 week series at our new church, Crosspoint/West University Baptist Church on building stronger...
